Biography

Patrice Heinz Schelkun is the owner and sole proprietor of Masterworks Decorative Painting, LLC, a decorative arts company founded in 2001.  Prior to her career in the arts, Ms. Schelkun worked in medical education and as a medical writer, producing articles on health and medicine for specialty journals as well as the popular magazine Cooking Light. Her interest in the arts, however, goes back to childhood, where she developed a love for drawing, painting and photography. She accepted her first mural commission at age 16.

Ms. Schelkun received her B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1980.  She completed a year of post-baccalaureate studies in Visual Communications at Kean University in Union, NJ before completing her M.A. at New York University in 1984.  Though largely self-taught, Ms. Schelkun has participated in workshops in faux finishing, trompe l’oeil and ornamental grisaille with internationally recognized decorative painter Pierre Finklestein at the Pierre Finklestein Institute in New York City. She also studied drawing and painting techniques used by the Old Masters under award-winning Georgian artist Niko Chocheli, an iconographer and painter now residing in Doylestown, PA who inspired her love for sacred art.

Her interest in stained glass as a medium for painting developed through classes taken at the Bucks County Community College in suburban Philadelphia.  This led to her first liturgical commission at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Richboro, PA, where she served as interior design consultant for a new parish center addition, and designed and painted a total of 17 stained glass windows for the chapel of St. Louise de Marillac in conjunction with Scintilla Architectural Stained Glass of Doylestown, PA.  Together with Scintilla, she also completed a large commission for a new chapel at LaSalle College High School in Wyndmoor, PA.  Her current projects include the design and painting of 18 figurative windows for St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Horsham, PA (Scintilla), as well as a stained glass dome for a residential client in conjunction with Darrah Studios of Gardenville, PA.

Ms. Schelkun is first and foremost dedicated to her husband, Michael, and four children, two of whom are grown and living their own exciting lives.  She works from a newly constructed studio at their home in Churchville, PA and, during the summer months, at their home on beautiful Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.
